Do you have a raised garden bed and have you successfully grown food in it?  If your answer is ‘no,’ be sure to get what you need through the Victory Garden Blitz program scheduled April 12-14.

The purpose of the Victory Garden Blitz is to provide people with materials and education they need to grow food at home. In response to requests, the organization is providing a beginners guide to gardening in Eastern Kentucky that goes with each bed provided by the Blitz.

Anyone can stop by the Berea Urban Farm on Adams Street and pick up the guide.

“As the price of food continues to increase and as the foods coming from thousands of miles away continue to decline in nutritional value, it becomes more important to grow our own food,”  said Cheyenne Olson, organizer for the Victory Garden Bliz.

Fresh vegetables can offset some of the health effects caused by poor diet. A single  3x5 cedar bed can provide a family with up to 60 pounds of fresh vegetables a year.

Studies have shown that kids that garden develop healthier eating habits. Also, gardens bring people together helping to build community.

Because Sustainable Berea has so many volunteers and such good financial support from local individuals and businesses, the Victory Garden Blitz is able to offer the raised garden beds at discounted prices.

To get a discounted bed, call the office at (859) 985-1689.

The beds can be  fully installed at your home or they can be sold as a d it yourself kit. A customized soil mix can also be purchased from the Berea Urban Farm.

The deadline for ordering beds is Monday, April 8.
