Irene Middleton Hobbs passed away peacefully on April 12, in Berea. Born on March 11, 1942, in New Trenton, Indiana.
Irene dedicated 37 years of her life to teaching in Jackson County, where she touched the lives of countless students with her knowledge and kindness. Her commitment to education was evident in her own academic achievements, having earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Eastern Kentucky University.
Irene's passions extended beyond the classroom. She found joy in sewing, quilting, and traveling. Irene's enthusiasm for University of Kentucky basketball was well-known, and she rarely missed a game.
Family was the cornerstone of Irene's life. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Coburn and Fannie Eversole Middleton; her devoted husband, James Edward "Eddie" Hobbs; her siblings, Peggy Lee Allen, Iris Ruth Middleton, Randall Coburn Middleton; and brother-in-law, Carl Seals. Her legacy lives on through her daughter, Kim Witt and her husband, Brian; her treasured granddaughter, Serena Witt; and her sisters, Phyllis Ann Cole, Lettie Jane Seals, and Brenda Sue (Don) Hobbs, and several nieces and nephews who will continue to honor her memory.
The family has chosen to honor Irene’s wishes for cremation with a private family service.
