The contest is dedicated to the memory of Madison County resident Amann Sowell and to the enjoyment and enrichment photography brought to his life. Many of the photos Sowell took are of landscapes and local features which, though very familiar, he challenged himself to see anew.
“That same spirit is at the heart of this contest: to encourage others to slow down, observe closely, and discover the beauty, wonder—and great photos—in the everyday. The Berea Urban Farm offers plenty of opportunities,” said Julie Sowell, Amann’s mother. The contest is sponsored by Amann’s family and hosted by the Berea Urban Farm.
Located on 1.4 acres in the center of Berea, the BUF is a market garden, demonstration area, and the centerpiece of non-profit Sustainable Berea. There will be plenty of things to photograph at BUF for the competition. Vegetables, herbs, pollinator flowers, berries, fruit trees, grasses, vines will be at their most beautiful in June, the month of the contest. There will also be birds, bees, butterflies and other insects that they support and that support plants. And there’s sure to be a rabbit or two as well.
“Amann Sowell had a unique eye for finding beauty in the everyday. We’re honored to host this contest in his memory and invite our community to slow down, look closely, and rediscover the wonder of the Berea Urban Farm through their lenses.” Executive Director of Sustainable Berea Betina Gardner said.
