Gary C. Abney

Mr. Gary C. Abney, 77, of Richmond, passed away June 13, 2025, in Naples, Italy, while vacationing with his family. 
A life-long resident of Richmond, he was born on July 16, 1947, to the late Ralph W. and Marie Anderson Abney. He was a graduate of Model Laboratory School and Eastern Kentucky University. Gary served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 6 years. 

Gary began a career in banking in 1971. He served as Senior Vice-President of the former State Bank & Trust Company and National City Bank and was the President of Richmond Bank and Trust. After he retired from banking, he embarked on a 20-year career as a successful real estate agent. 

Gary loved to give back to his community. He served on many boards in Richmond, Madison County and at Eastern Kentucky University. He served with the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, the Madison County United Way, and the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority Board. He served as treasurer for the Richmond Pops at the Park, as well as chair of the Richmond Utilities Board and the Richmond Industrial Authority.  Gary served as President of the EKU Alumni Association and the Colonel Club and was chair of the Arlington Association. He served as a member of the EKU Board of Regents for 13 years and was board chairman for 3 years.

Gary was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed EKU and UK Athletics. He also had fun watching his grandson and granddaughter run in their cross-country races. He enjoyed spending time with his family. 

Survivors include his daughter: Susan Abney Creamer (Phillip); his son: Brian Abney and his wife Jennifer Robinette; his brother: Bill Abney (Bev); his grandchildren: Justin Creamer and Chloe Creamer: his life partner: Dr. Adrienne Millett and her children, Jason Owen (Catherine), Jonathan Owen and Drew Owen (Kennie Logan); as well as her grandchildren: Hunter Owen, Ruby Cate Owen and his friend and mother of their children, Joanne Covington.  He also enjoyed spending time with several of his closest cousins, Ralph Hacker, Joe Wayne Hacker, Elaina Hudson and Lee Browning. 
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at The First Christian Church, 412 West Main Street, with Rev. Patrick Messer and Father Jim Sichko officiating.  Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday at The First Christian  Church.
Pallbearers will be Brian Abney, Bill Abney, Philip Creamer, Justin Creamer, Drew Owen, and Charles Hudson. Honorary Pallbearers are Ralph Hacker, Joe Wayne Hacker, Bill Jennings, Danny Reynolds and Ryan Brewer.
 In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Care Plus, 350 Isaacs Lane, Richmond, Kentucky 40475
