RICHMOND — Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) welcomes Dr. Tim Holt as chair of the School of Aviation.

Holt brings extensive academic, aviation and business expertise to EKU, with more than a decade of experience in teaching and administration at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a 22-year career with the United States Navy, retiring as a chief petty officer.

Additionally, Holt’s academic background includes research and presentations on a variety of emerging aviation topics, such as unmanned aircraft and air traffic control.

“The only university-based aviation program in the state, EKU Aviation delivers exceptional results with pilot pathway partnerships and 100% job placement rate among aviation graduates,” said EKU President David McFaddin. “Under Dr. Holt’s leadership, our aviation program is perfectly positioned to continue to grow, innovate and produce top-tier aviation professionals.”

Previously serving as dean of the College of Aviation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Holt focused on curriculum innovation, accreditation and industry partnerships. He also taught courses in airport management, aviation safety and unmanned systems for the bachelor’s in aeronautics and the master’s in safety science programs at Embry-Riddle.

During his service with the U.S. Navy, he logged over 2,500 flight hours on both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft as a naval aircrewman, flight instructor and evaluator. He held key leadership positions in operations, training and safety, including his final assignment as director of the Reserve Helicopter Training School in San Diego. He received the Navy Commendation Medal and the War on Terrorism Service Medal, among other awards and decorations.

Now as EKU’s new aviation chair, Holt guides the strategic direction of EKU Aviation programs, upholds academic excellence and fosters strong relationships with industry partners to ensure students are prepared for success in the rapidly evolving field. Holt started the position with EKU on June 1.

“As I step into this role, I'm excited to build on EKU’s solid foundation, create more opportunities for our students and keep our program moving forward in innovation, safety and real-world relevance,” said Holt. “With the support of our dedicated faculty and staff, we’ll strengthen industry partnerships, explore new technologies and continue to promote a welcoming, hands-on learning environment where everyone can thrive.”

Holt’s impressive background includes international experience having developed and taught global aviation safety courses in line with International Civil Aviation Organization standards for Airports Council International (ACI). Contributing to the advancement of the industry, he’s developed safety management systems, emergency response procedures and internal evaluation checklists for airports and aviation organizations across the U.S.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a Certified Member of both the American Association of Airport Executives and ACI, and an Associate Member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators. Holt holds a Ph.D. in Education with a focus on educational leadership from Northcentral University, a Master of Aeronautical Science and a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics with a business management emphasis from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“EKU has a long-standing tradition of excellence in aviation education, and I am grateful to join an institution that is nationally recognized for producing highly skilled and safety-focused aviation professionals,” said Holt. “Our program is more than just flight training—it's a launchpad for the next generation of leaders in the aerospace industry.”

EKU Aviation offers concentrations in aerospace management, professional flight and unmanned aircraft systems. In the spring, the Kentucky General Assembly passed legislation to enhance air traffic control education in the state. EKU plans to request approval from the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education to add an air traffic control and air traffic safety program, increasing EKU Aviation academic program offerings as well as workforce opportunities for the Commonwealth.

Over the past year, EKU launched pilot pathway programs with Republic Airways and Allegiant Air to support students in their career pursuits. Enhancing the infrastructure for the aviation program with state and federal investments, EKU is constructing a $25 million Flight Training Center and a $4.5 million general aviation terminal at the Central Kentucky Regional Airport.

“As one of our highest-demand programs serving more than 450 students, we continue to invest in and expand our aviation program. Dr. Holt will be instrumental in further developing our programs, partnerships and facilities for the industry needs of today and the future,” said McFaddin.
