Barbara Bentley
Barbara Bentley, 77, a beloved wife, mother, and pillar of the Madison County community, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, surrounded by family. She was born on Dec. 6, 1947, to the late Gerald and Beula Yinger. Known for her deep compassion, unwavering service, and radiant spirit, Barbara dedicated her life to uplifting others and creating spaces of hope, dignity, and belonging.
A native of Eastern Kentucky, Barbara wore her roots — and her accent — with pride, always grounded in the values that shaped her: faith, family, and community. She was a proud member of Tates Creek Baptist Church, where her faith guided a life of quiet leadership and generous service.
Barbara spent her career as a social work supervisor, advocating tirelessly for those in need. Her heart for service extended into countless roles, including serving on the Madison County Schools Board and the Kentucky Professional Standards Board through the Kentucky Education Association. She was an active member of Altrusa and a devoted volunteer.
One of her greatest legacies was helping to establish Hope’s Wings Domestic Violence Program in Richmond, where she worked to provide safety and support to women and children escaping abuse. She also gave her time to The Nest in Lexington, continuing her mission to serve others with compassion and care.
Barbara’s home was as welcoming as her heart. An avid gardener and lover of bees and butterflies, she found joy in nature, good books, and time with family. Her carrot cake and Christmas cookies were legendary — and so were her grammar corrections and reminders to visit the dentist, offered with her signature wit and warmth.
She is survived by her loving husband Mike, her son and daughter-in-law Jonathan and Ashley,  extended family, and a wide circle of friends and community members whose lives were forever touched by her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering presence. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Karen.
Barbara Bentley lived a life defined not by what she gained but by what she gave. Her legacy will continue to bloom in the gardens she planted, the lives she lifted, and the love she so freely gave.
Barbara’s funeral service will be on Tuesday, July 15, at 1 p.m. at Oldham, Roberts, and Powell Funeral Home in Richmond. Her visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service. A private burial will follow on July 16 at Green Acres Cemetery, Whitesburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hope’s Wings Domestic Violence Program https://hopeswings.networkforgood.com/projects/106218-main-giving-page or The Nest Center for Women, Children & Families, https://www.thenestlexington.org/financial-giving in honor of Barbara’s lifelong commitment to lifting others.
Friends and family members are encouraged to share memories and leave messages of condolence here on Barbara’s tribute page.
