Nancy Darby Lake, a cherished educator, devoted family matriarch, and talented craftswoman, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, in Richmond. Born on April 23, 1939, in Greenup County, she was a beacon of love and wisdom throughout her 86 years.
Nancy's life was marked by her dedication to her family and her passion for teaching. After a fulfilling career as a teacher at Berea Community School, she continued to influence lives through her involvement with the Bluegrass Area Basket Weavers and the Wallaceton Homemakers.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John D. Lake, her parents, Leonard and Mary Stuart Darby, and her siblings, Betty Baird and Gene Darby. Nancy's legacy lives on through her sons, Mike and his wife Julie, and Scott and his wife Karla; her adored grandchildren, Ben and his wife Joanie, Bailey, Jared, and Rebekah; and the countless students and friends whose lives she touched.
Nancy's love for her family was unparalleled. She reveled in watching her grandchildren's sporting events and was their most enthusiastic supporter. Her talents as an excellent seamstress brought joy to many, especially when she sewed dresses for her granddaughters, holiday sweatshirts, and aprons for her daughters-in-law. Halloween was a special time, as she spent countless hours crafting imaginative costumes for her grandchildren.
One of Nancy's most treasured contributions was the compilation of a family cookbook, preserving her cherished recipes for future generations. Her delicate beading and crafts were not just hobbies but a testament to her meticulous care and artistic spirit. Her creative basket weaving won her many ribbons at county and state fairs.
