Michael Orland Powell, 70, known affectionately to his friends and family as “Mike,” passed away surrounded by his loved ones in Lexington, on July 15, 2025, . Born on Aug. 22, 1954, in Dayton, Ohio, Mike was a man whose life was characterized by his dedication to his nation, his thriving career, and the love he had for his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Orland Powell, Jr. and Opal Martin Phillips, as well as his beloved daughter, Michelle Powell Johnson. Mike’s legacy continues through his daughter, Renee (Chris) Powell Eaton, his brother, Keith (Laura E. Keillor, and her children, Timmy, Tommy, Krystal, and Steven) Powell, his adoring grandchildren Skyler, Chloe, Emma, Caylin, and Hailey, his nephew, Dallas (Dana-Marie) Powell and their children Brandi, Jason, Kaitlynn, Liliana, and as well as his step-nieces, Jennifer Squire and Kristina Simon. Additionally, his life was enriched by numerous extended family members and a wide circle of friends whose lives he touched.
After graduating from Berea Community High School in 1973, Mike embarked on a journey filled with varied, admirable, and adventurous pursuits. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, a testament to his unwavering patriotism and valor. Mike’s skills as a mechanic were exceptional, leading him to establish a successful career as a business owner of Mac Tools Distributing. His leadership and expertise were further showcased with his support in repairing combat vehicles during both the Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts (2005-2008).
Mike’s reputation as a talented and reliable mechanic was only rivaled by his stature as a proud veteran. Friends and family will remember him for his generous spirit, compassion, his ability to fix almost anything, and his unwavering commitment to our country.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Friday, July 25, 2025, at Lakes Funeral Home with Pastor Grant Martin officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Berea Cemetery. 
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Lakes Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
