Mr. John Dwight Powell, 57, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away on June 27, 2026, as the result of the devastating flash flood that struck his home in Richmond.

John will be deeply missed by his family and the many friends whose lives he touched. He was an exceptionally intelligent, articulate, and talented man whose curiosity and passion for learning enriched every conversation. Strong in his convictions, John approached life with empathy, integrity, and a steadfast belief in doing what was right for the good of others.

A gifted artist with a creative spirit, John enjoyed crafting and building character models and developing imaginative ideas through role-playing games. He was an avid reader, an eloquent and passionate writer, and a thoughtful conversationalist, who enjoyed discussing history, current events and the world around him.

John’s love of fantasy and science fiction was lifelong, and he was an enthusiastic fan of Star Wars. He also had a deep appreciation for music, especially the timeless work of Elvis Presley.  His exceptional mind, love of history and appreciation for the past, reflected both his intellectual curiosity and his sentimental nature.

Above all John loved his family deeply. His magnetic personality, authenticity and unwavering commitment to his beliefs left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He lived on his own terms, remaining true to himself with courage and sincerity.

John was preceded in death by his mother: Juanita Genaw (Harrison); his father: Gene Powell; his stepfathers: Odis Alexander and Michael Genaw; his stepbrother: Michael Genaw II; his stepsister: Melissa Coyt; his aunt: Thelma Harrison; his uncle: Richard Harrison and his grandparents: John H. Harrison and Zada Beryl Harrison.

Survivors include his brother: Timothy Alexander; his stepsister: Stephanie Stephens; and his beloved nieces and nephews: Taylor Alexander, Caleb Alexander, Devon Castle, Ian Castle and Lainey Castle; his aunts: Elizabeth Satterfield, Teresa (Jessie) Young and Tina Harrison; his uncles: Benny (Karen) Harrison and Danny Harrison.

John you left us far too soon. Your memory will forever remain in our hearts. We will miss you always and love you forever.  We will always cherish the time we were blessed to share with you.

A Celebration of Life service and gathering of family and friends is being planned for a later date.
