Joyce Lakes, 81, of Berea, Kentucky, passed away on August 16, 2026. She was born on December 30, 1944, in Madison County, Kentucky, and lived a life marked by kindness, faith, and devotion to others.

Joyce was a woman whose presence brought comfort and warmth to those around her. She was known for her selfless nature and for the genuine care she showed to family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She had a gentle spirit and a heart that was always ready to help, encourage, and uplift others. Joyce found joy in simple pleasures and meaningful moments, and she carried herself with grace throughout her life.

A faithful woman, Joyce loved attending church and worshiping the Lord. Her faith was an important part of who she was, and it guided the way she lived each day. She also enjoyed listening to Bluegrass gospel music, which brought her peace and happiness. Joyce loved working jigsaw puzzles, thrifting at yard sales and antique shops, and spending time with family and friends, and she especially enjoyed making people happy. Her benevolent spirit was evident in the way she treated others, and she had a special gift for making those around her feel loved and appreciated. She was known for her sense of humor and she made certain that she was entertaining to others and was everyone’s favorite because of her desire to make people feel at ease.

Joyce retired from Exide after years of dedicated work. She was respected for her strong work ethic and dependable nature. In both her professional life and her personal life, she was steady, thoughtful, and committed. Those who knew her will remember her as someone who gave of herself freely and who found purpose in serving others with kindness and humility.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry and Eliza Rose Lutes, her husband, Carl Lakes, and two sisters, Mary Ballard and Eula Medford. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life, and she carried her family bonds with deep love and respect.

She is survived by her daughter, Devonna and her husband, Paul Abner; her grandson, Alec and his wife, Cori Hensley; one sister, Geneva Ballard; one brother, Mickey and his wife, Ann Lutes, and several nieces and nephews. Joyce treasured her family and the relationships she shared with them. Her love for them was steadfast, and she took great pride in the lives of those she leaves behind.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Chrisman officiating. Private burial followed. Visitation was Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Lakes Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at www.
