Main Street Closed as Crews Battle Downtown London Fire

Posted

LONDON, Ky. — A fire in downtown London forced the closure of a major stretch of Main Street Wednesday morning as firefighters worked to contain flames at the Benge-Cessna Law Office building.

According to the London Police Department, Main Street was shut down between 3rd Street and 5th Street while emergency crews responded to the active fire. Motorists were advised to avoid the area, with officials warning the roadway would remain closed for several hours as firefighting and safety operations continued.

The blaze was battled by the London Fire Department with assistance from multiple neighboring agencies. One individual was transported to the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital for treatment. City officials confirmed the individual is in good condition.

Randall Weddle praised the coordinated response and the efforts of first responders following the incident at the Benge-Cessna Law Office.

“I want to thank every agency that has assisted our fire department this morning,” Weddle said. “There are so many great firefighters in this community, and their quick response and teamwork made a difference.”

Officials said updates will continue to be provided to the public as crews remain on scene and investigators work to determine the cause of the fire. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes around downtown until Main Street fully reopens.
