Laverne’s big adventure lands her in the canine pokey
November 10, 2024
Someone once joked that procrastination is a good thing because you always have something to do tomorrow and you’re free to do absolutely nothing today.
That seems to be the way Laverne, a lazy little mixed-breed farm dog, approaches life. She lounges around the house all day with nothing to occupy her time other than eating, sleeping and gaining weight. Sometimes to break the monotony, she waddles down the lane to visit her grand family.
It was during one of these waddles that Laverne embarked upon a great adventure. You see, some well-meaning soul spotted her waddling along, assumed she was lost, and hauled her to the dog pound, or as Laverne most certainly perceived it, the canine pokey, where she was locked in a “cell” next to an ill=tempered fellow who spent the day growling at her.
Someone at the pound put Laverne’s mugshot on Facebook. Her family saw the post and rushed down to spring her. And that’s how Laverne’s great adventure came to a happy ending.
In life, we all will face those days that begin normally enough but that go terribly haywire, sending us on unexpected adventures. Sometimes they’re fun adventures. Sometimes they’re anything but fun.
When the day goes entirely wrong, we should remember that our loving Heavenly Father will be there with us, as we’re told in one of my favorite scripture passages, Psalm 46, which says:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, will not we fear, though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”
If our Lord is with us, and He certainly is, whatever unexpected adventure comes our way, we’ll be in good company.
We’d do well to face the unexpected just like Laverne did, with our little tails wagging.
