April 29, 2025

A Berea Police officer was injured and two others were hurt following an officer-involved shooting in the parking lot at Berea Wal-Mart Tuesday morning.

According to the Berea Police Department and the Kentucky State Police, the initial investigation indicated that BPD responded to Walmart in Berea to investigate a stolen vehicle. When officers attempted to make contact with the driver, he placed the car in reverse and struck an officer, pinning him between two vehicles. The officer discharged his service weapon into the vehicle. One officer and two of the suspects were transported to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Donna Mabes, a customer in the store at the time, said she heard "5-6 rapid shots" and was given the OK to leave the store by first responders.
According to Berea Police, there is no active threat to the community and all involved are in custody. As standard practice and procedure, the Kentucky State Police continues to investigate the incident.  Wal-Mart is open for business, however, KSP and the Berea PD request that customers leave space for officers to work the scene.
